Afro-Latin Sounds
The Boston-based Afro-Latin music group Sol y Canto performs Saturday night at Cal State Northridge. The ensemble is led by husband-and-wife team Brian and Rosi Amador. He plays Spanish guitar, sings and writes music with a modern bent; she sings and plays percussion. The group includes Alan del Castillo on wind instruments and Saul Sierra on bass. It has performed at the White House, the Kennedy Center and across the country.

Classic Comedy
Neil Simon’s “Last of the Red Hot Lovers” opens Friday in Granada Hills. The play tells the story of Barney Cashman, a man happily married for 23 years who feels he must have one last fling. It has been called a “genuinely brilliant play.”

Film Screening
The Alex Film Society will screen the classic “The Sound of Music” Saturday in Glendale. Directed by Robert Wise and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, “The Sound of Music” won five Oscars (including best picture) in 1965. The Rodgers and Hammerstein score includes such favorites as “Do Re Mi,” “Climb Every Mountain,” “My Favorite Things,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and “Edelweiss.” The screening will feature a pristine studio archive print and selected ancillary materials.

Scottish Music
Fiddler Aly Bain and accordionist Phil Cunningham will perform Saturday in Encino. The duo are among the most celebrated musicians on the Scottish traditional music scene. Since they began working together in 1988, they have toured Scotland annually in addition to giving frequent performances in continental Europe and North America.
