Yorba Linda’s New Course Names GM

Mark Hoesing has been named general manager at Black Gold Golf Club, the Yorba Linda course scheduled for a late summer opening.

Hoesing has worked as a regional manager for course operator Kemper Sports Management, which will run Black Gold. His primary responsibilities have been Hidden Valley Golf Club in Norco and Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert.

He also managed several other golf course operations in San Diego County, including The Vineyard at Escondido, Eagle Crest Golf Club, Carmel Mountain Ranch and another one in Temecula, Redhawk Golf Club.

CHANGES AT BIG CANYON

Clint Whitehill, former head professional at the SCGA Members Club, has been named head professional at Big Canyon Country Club.

Whitehill replaces Kelly Manos, who took a job at The Club at Morningside in Rancho Mirage. Whitehill, who oversaw a variety of course improvements at the SCGA Members Club, will report to Bob Lovejoy, who remains as Director of Golf.

“We’re very fortunate to have him,” Lovejoy said.

Pat Kemball, former general manager at Practice Golf Center in Menifee, replaces Whitehill at the Members Club.

ANTEATER HOLES

UC Irvine will participate in the Big West Conference championships today and Tuesday at Serrano Country Club in El Dorado Hills.

Mike Lavery, a sophomore from Irvine High, is one of the top players for the Anteaters. They will play 36 holes today and finish with 18 on Tuesday.

Last season, Irvine finished fifth.

CITY CHAMPIONSHIP

The Anaheim City Amateur Championships kicked off over the weekend with Alex Oh of Long Beach winning the men’s title with a seven-under 135 two-day total at Anaheim Hills and Dad Miller.

The women’s and seniors’ championships will be Saturday and Sunday at the same courses.

The 36-hole stroke-play tournaments are broken into handicap divisions. The men’s championship flight was for players with maximum handicap indexes of 4.3.

JUNIOR CLASSIC

Breene Murphy of Los Alamitos shot 68-69--137 and tied for third in the recent American Junior Golf Assn. Arizona Junior Classic at The Raven Golf Club in Phoenix.

Murphy, a senior at Los Alamitos High headed for UCLA, finished two strokes behind winner Masaki Nakanishi of Japan. Jay Choi of Buena Park finished three strokes back in a tie for fifth. Taylor Wood of Laguna Niguel was another stroke back in a tie for seventh and Nico Bollini of Yorba Linda finished 14th.

Irene Cho of La Habra shot 69-76--145 and tied for seventh in the girls’ division, seven strokes behind winner Whitney Welch of Las Vegas.

Stella Lee of Irvine tied for 14th and Jennie Lee of Huntington Beach tied for 16th.
