Newport Harbor Yacht Wins Race to Ensenada

James Madden’s Stark Raving Mad, a J160 from the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, took first overall on corrected time Sunday at the 54th Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race.

Madden sailed the 125-mile race 13 to 14 miles outside the Coronado Islands to take advantage of steady winds.

Roy Disney’s Pyewacket, a Reichle/Pughe 73 from the Los Angeles Yacht Club, earned first-to-the-finish honors when it crossed the finish line just before 4 a.m. Sunday. Robert McNulty skippering Chance, a new ultra-light, finished second.

Jeffrey Cohen’s Mental Floss, a Corsair F-311 from Los Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, was the first multi-hull to finish and was first on corrected time.

John Maclaurin’s Pendragon IV, a Davidson 52, was the third boat to cross the finish line at 5:13 a.m., and won the ULDB-A class. Cita Litt’s Cita, a Schock 40, won the ULDB-B class and came in second overall on corrected time. Ernie Minney’s Samarang, a Classic Schooner, won the Ancient Marine Class.

In the first double-handed class, Andy Horning’s Day Tripper, a Cal 29 from the Long Beach Yacht Club, took first-place honors. Joe Deggenhardt’s Lickety Split, a Catalina 38 from Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, won the PHRF-G class.

The Orange County Blue Star suffered its first loss of the season, falling, 3-2, in overtime to the San Fernando Valley Heroes in a PDL Southwestern Conference game Sunday at San Fernando.

The Heroes (1-0-1) scored the winning goal five minutes into overtime.

Seth George (Santa Margarita High) and Tom Poltl scored the goals for the Blue Star (1-1).
