Pilot, 84, Hits Lines, Survives Crash
An 84-year-old Upland man who has been a pilot since World War II crashed his private plane into power lines early Tuesday after running low on fuel.
Donald Moore suffered a broken ankle and heel and was in fair condition, authorities said. His Piper Cherokee PA-28 hit high-tension lines just west of the Hesperia Municipal Airport at 12:30 a.m. and fell onto a fence near several homes and about 30 yards from the California Aqueduct.
Authorities said Moore took off from Redding Airport in Northern California at 7:35 p.m. Monday.
No one else was in the plane and no one on the ground was hurt.
