Roddick Ousted by Pavel
Andrei Pavel of Romania upset teenager Andy Roddick, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-3, Friday in the quarterfinals of the $2.95-million Tennis Masters Series-Canada tournament at Montreal.
Pavel will face Germany’s Tommy Haas in the semifinals. Haas beat 10th-seeded Arnaud Clement of France, 6-2, 6-4.
Ninth-seeded Patrick Rafter of Australia also advanced, beating fourth-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Rafter will face France’s Fabrice Santoro, a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 winner over Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic.
Pavel broke Roddick only twice--for a 2-1 lead in the first set and a 4-2 lead in the third.
Roddick, coming off a victory Thursday over top-ranked Gustavo Kuerten, looked shaky from the outset.
When he lost his second service game, the 18-year-old slammed his racket. Pavel served out the set, fighting off two break points.
The two held service through the second set and Roddick dominated the tiebreaker.
In the third set, Roddick double faulted and hit a volley into the net for a loss of service. Pavel closed out the match with two aces.
Hugo Armando beat sixth-seeded David Sanchez of Spain, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2), to advance to the semifinals of the San Marino clay-court tournament.
Armando faces Costa Rica’s Juan Antonio Marin, a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) winner over Hungary’s Attila Savolt.
