Neighbors Protest Fence Blocking Path
About two dozen residents in San Clemente held a demonstration Saturday aimed at preserving a pathway that for decades has provided a shortcut to a park and the beach.
A resident recently erected a fence to close off the city-owned path, which runs between several homes. The City Council is set to decide Wednesday, after a hearing, whether to abandon the 10-foot-wide swath of land. That would permanently close the path to the public.
The protesters Saturday intended to use picks and shovels to tear down the fence and clear overgrown vegetation from the path. At deputies’ request, they didn’t.
The path, which cuts between Avenida Montalvo and Avenida Lobeiro near Calafia Park, has been the focus of debate for months.
“This was part of the original plan of the neighborhood,” said protester Norman Mjellen.
The City Council will hold a public hearing on the issue in a 7 p.m. meeting Wednesday at City Hall, 100 Avenida Presidio.
