The Philadelphia Phillies put left-hander Randy Wolf on the 15-day disabled list Saturday after he sprained his left ankle on the dugout steps at Pacific Bell Park.

Wolf, a former Woodland Hills El Camino Real High player, injured himself Friday night. Wolf, 6-10 with a 4.50 earned-run average, won’t be eligible to return until Aug. 17.

Philadelphia recalled top right-handed pitching prospect Brandon Duckworth from triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Duckworth, 13-2 with a 2.63 ERA in 22 starts for the Red Barons this season, leads the International League with 150 strikeouts. He will take Wolf’s turn in the rotation and make his major league debut Tuesday against San Diego.

Manager Larry Bowa warned against heightened expectations for his young pitcher, who won’t join the Phillies until the team returns to Philadelphia.

“We’re not talking like Cy Young is coming in here,” Bowa said. “He’s getting some big-time raves, and I think we’ve just got to give him a chance to pitch. Everywhere I go, people have heard about him, and they’re talking about him.”

Baltimore Oriole first baseman David Segui was taken off the 15-day disabled list. Segui, out since July 16 with a sprained ligament in his left knee, is hitting .294 with eight home runs and 37 runs batted in.

To make room on the roster, the Orioles sent outfielder Larry Bigbie to triple-A Rochester. Bigbie batted .273 with one home run and four RBIs in 17 games.

Darren Daulton resigned as bullpen coach for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, citing personal reasons.

Daulton, a three-time National League all-star catcher with the Phillies, was appointed in April. Tampa Bay hired Glenn Ezell, who had been a roving catching instructor in the Detroit organization, as Daulton’s replacement.

Cleveland Indian left-hander Chuck Finley will make his first start since June 25 on Thursday in Minnesota, the finale of a three-game series against the first-place Twins.

Finley has been sidelined twice this season with spasms in his neck and back. He’s 19-15 against the Twins, his most wins against any team.

The Montreal Expos signed journeyman outfielder Ryan Thompson to a minor league contract and assigned him to triple-A Ottawa. Thompson opted for free agency after being sent outright to the minor leagues last week by the Florida Marlins.

Arizona Diamondback pitcher Bobby Witt, on the disabled list since April 8 with elbow and shoulder problems, threw 105 pitches in seven innings of a rehabilitation start with triple-A Tucson and is ready to return to the rotation. However, a call-up may be delayed because the Diamondbacks have three scheduled off-days in the coming weeks.

Detroit Tiger outfielder Roger Cedeno left Saturday’s game against the Oakland A’s after five innings because of a stiff back. Tiger Manager Phil Garner said Cedeno was “doubtful” for today’s game against Oakland.
