Levens Out 4-6 Weeks

Green Bay Packer running back Dorsey Levens broke his hand in his first carry against the Cleveland Browns Saturday night and will be sidelined four-to-six weeks.

Levens stayed in and finished with 29 yards in five rushes.

Levens had surgery on both knees last season and was hoping to pace himself during the preseason.

“Why not play [hurt]?” Levens said. “I’ve played with everything else.”

Seattle cornerback Shawn Springs injured his left hamstring early in the second quarter of the Seahawks’ exhibition loss against the Indianapolis Colts.

The injury occurred on a third-and-three play while Springs was covering Colt receiver Terrence Wilkins about 30 yards from where the play ended.

He was helped off the field by two trainers. He did not return and kept his leg wrapped in ice.

Terry Allen, 33, who was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings and played in the same system run by then-Viking offensive coordinator and current Baltimore Raven Coach Brian Billick, signed with the Super Bowl champions.

Allen, who signed a one-year contract for the veteran minimum salary of $477,000, beat out former Seattle and Dallas running back Chris Warren for the job left open when Jamal Lewis sustained a season-ending knee injury Wednesday.

Pro Bowl linebacker Sam Cowart, slowed because back spasms, is questionable for the Buffalo Bills’ exhibition opener tonight against St. Louis. . . . Brad Johnson will start at quarterback and take about 15 snaps in Tampa Bay’s exhibition opener Monday night against the Miami Dolphins.
