Giants, Bonds Tumble in New York

NEW YORK —  Steve Trachsel didn’t want to help Barry Bonds gain on Mark McGwire.

“He has a home run off me already this year, and it was a fastball in,” Trachsel said. “If he was going to hit one, I wanted him to hit it the opposite way.”

Bonds didn’t come close to homering, going one for three with two walks and a strikeout Saturday night as the New York Mets beat the San Francisco Giants, 3-2, on Rey Ordonez’s RBI single in the 11th inning at Shea Stadium.

Trachsel, who gave up McGwire’s record-breaking 62nd homer three years ago, tied his career high with 11 strikeouts and held Bonds to an opposite-field flyout. Bonds, who hit his major league-leading 55th homer Thursday at Montreal, needs 16 homers in San Francisco’s final 33 games to top McGwire’s record of 70.

Rick White gave up a two-out single to Bonds in the eighth on a grounder that took a bad hop past second baseman Edgardo Alfonzo. Bonds scored on John Vander Wal’s single to make it 2-2.

The Mets won it in the 11th against Robb Nen (3-3) when Jay Payton reached on a one-out infield single, took second on Vance Wilson’s single and scored on Ordonez’s opposite-field single to right, just beating Vander Wal’s throw.
