Eleven people died in traffic accidents on Los Angeles County freeways over the long Christmas holiday weekend, the California Highway Patrol reported Thursday.

Statewide, there were 41 fatalities during the CHP’s maximum enforcement period, from 6 p.m. Dec. 21 to midnight Tuesday.

The number of holiday traffic deaths was higher than in 2000, when the CHP reported seven fatalities countywide and 33 in California. Officials said, however, that last year’s enforcement period was more than 12 hours shorter.

Officers arrested 322 motorists for drunk driving in Los Angeles County this holiday, and 1,426 throughout the state. Of the 1,127 suspected drunken drivers in California last year, 234 were arrested in the county, CHP officials said.
