No. 7 Oilers Fall in Overtime to Marina
Senior Grant Hauxhurst scored both goals for No. 10 Marina, which defeated seventh-ranked Huntington Beach, 2-1, in overtime, in a Sunset League boys’ soccer game Monday at Huntington Beach High.
It was the fourth consecutive league victory for Marina (14-6-4, 5-4), which plays Fountain Valley for third place Wednesday.
Hauxhurst scored his first goal midway through the second half on a penalty kick. His second goal, four minutes into overtime, came off a cross from Roy Phillips.
Hector Salazar scored for Huntington Beach (11-5-1, 6-3) in the 33rd minute.
In other Sunset League games:
No. 6 Los Alamitos 2, Esperanza 1 (OT)--Michael Munoz scored in the second minute of the second half of overtime for Los Alamitos (16-2-4, 6-1-2).
Shawn Dohrman of Esperanza scored in the first half but Cameron Kolovos tied the score in the 76th minute to send the game into overtime.
Edison 1, No. 8 Fountain Valley 0--Edison’s Bryan Flynn scored the winning goal in the 35th minute, giving the host Chargers their first league win.
Goalkeeper Joey Balbas had eight saves in his second shutout for Edison (3-12-3, 1-8).
Fountain Valley is 10-5-6, 4-4-1.
In the Orange League:
No. 9 Brea Olinda 2, Anaheim 1--Junior Brandon Young scored the game-winner in the 50th minute for Brea Olinda (22-1-2, 7-0-2).
In the Sea View League:
Newport Harbor 1, Laguna Hills 0--Newport Harbor’s Trey Meek scored four minutes into the game, his sixth goal in seven games, as the Sailors (4-5-6, 2-2-3) kept their league title hopes alive.
In the South Coast League:
No. 5 Capistrano Valley 4, Mission Viejo 2--Capistrano Valley’s Greg Robertson scored off a pass Luis Vega in the 55th minute to tie it, 2-2, and Casey McConnell scored on a header off a throw-in from Garrett Petry in the 70th minute for the Cougars (19-3-5, 6-0-2).
Sam Astan and Dan Desmond scored for Mission Viejo.
In nonleague boys’ basketball:
Tarbut V’Torah 71, Oxford 42--Tanner Bral had 21 points, Geoff Keith had 20 and Noam Dashti had 13 points and 22 rebounds for Tarbut V’Torah (19-1).
In South Coast League girls’ basketball:
El Toro 54, Mission Viejo 37--Carrie Twadell had 21 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks for El Toro (16-6, 6-3).
