Red Wings’ Fedorov in Midseason Form

Sergei Fedorov had no trouble getting right back into the regular-season swing.

Coming off the All-Star game, Fedorov scored a highlight-worthy goal Tuesday night to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators at Detroit.

The Red Wings improved to 6-0-1 in their last seven home games. It was Detroit’s first home victory against Ottawa since a 4-1 win Nov. 26, 1997.

Fedorov made the score 2-0 when he made a spectacular move to beat rookie defenseman Karel Rachunek before pushing the puck past goaltender Patrick Lalime into the left side of the net.

“We turned the puck over,” Ottawa Coach Jacques Martin said. “With his speed, he took advantage of it. He went around our defense and kept control of the puck.”

It was Fedorov’s team-leading 24th goal.

“It’s a lot of fun to be able to score a goal like that,” Fedorov said. “I didn’t see it went in until the fans cheered.”

New Jersey 4, Montreal 0--Alexander Mogilny scored two goals to lead the Devils at Montreal.

Martin Brodeur, a Montreal native, stopped 27 shots for his fifth shutout of the season and 47th of his career, moving him past Canadien Hall of Famer Ken Dryden into 21st place on the all-time list.

San Jose 1, Calgary 1--Steve Shields made 27 saves at Calgary, Canada, helping to extend the Sharks’ road unbeaten streak to seven games.

St. Louis 2, Columbus 2--Scott Young scored his second goal of the game with 8.2 seconds to play in regulation, lifting the Blues to a tie at Columbus, Ohio.

Buffalo 6, New York Rangers 3--J.P. Dumont and defenseman Jay McKee scored in the first three minutes at New York to help the Sabres send the Rangers to their fifth loss in six games.

Boston 4, Philadelphia 3--P.J. Axelsson scored the tiebreaking goal with 9:50 to play at Boston.

Minnesota 4, Tampa Bay 2--Scott Pellerin scored the go-ahead goal with 8:12 to play at Tampa, Fla.

Former Boston Bruin defenseman Marty McSorley, convicted of assault for hitting an opponent in the head with a stick last season, might play in the minor leagues or Europe before his one-year suspension from the NHL ends Feb. 20, his agent said. Mike Barnett said there has been significant interest from two NHL teams in signing the unrestricted free agent, but both want the 37-year-old McSorley to play in games at a lower level before making a decision. . . . Owen Nolan of the San Jose Sharks was suspended indefinitely by the NHL for a hit Thursday that sent Grant Marshall of the Dallas Stars to the hospital because of a concussion. . . .
