Baylor Shuts Out Titans in Baseball
Cal State Fullerton committed three errors, leading to four unearned runs, and had only three hits Saturday in a 5-0 loss to Baylor in a nonconference baseball game in Waco, Texas.
Baylor starting pitcher Steven White gave up two hits and struck out five in seven innings to get the win and reliever Paul Thorp got the final six outs for the Bears (4-2).
Titan starting pitcher Nick Lovato gave up three runs--two unearned--in four innings and allowed three hits and four walks.
Darric Merrell took over in the fifth inning for Cal State Fullerton (2-5) and yielded four hits, a walk and two unearned runs.
Shortstop Mike Rouse had two of the Titans’ hits, both singles, and third baseman Shawn Norris also singled.
The Titans and Bears will meet today in the final game of the three-game series.
In another nonconference game:
USC 10, Long Beach State 1--After nearly a one-hour rain delay, the Trojans took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and went on to win easily at home. USC is 6-0, its best start since 1988.
Infielder Edgar Varela hit a home run in the second inning for Long Beach State (3-2).
Rik Currier (2-0) pitched seven innings, allowing three hits and no walks, for the win.
In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:
Vanguard 80, Concordia 65--Brandon Cablay made nine of 12 shots from the field and had 24 points and Dennis Keane had 21 points and nine rebounds for host Vanguard (7-18, 3-11).
Chris Pacana had 15 points and Danny Genung 13 for Concordia (10-14, 4-10).
In a nonconference game:
Chapman 83, San Jose Christian 60--Tim Werdel made four three-pointers and scored 27 points to lead host Chapman (19-5). Sammy Bell added 18 points and Brian VonDerahe grabbed 11 rebounds as Chapman took a 48-23 lead at halftime and shot 53% from the field.
In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:
Concordia 68, Vanguard 63--After 12 lead changes and 13 ties, visiting Concordia pulled away in the final six minutes with a 13-4 run.
The Eagles took a 60-51 lead with 1:54 remaining, largely on the hot shooting of Taryn Commins, who finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Commins made a three-pointer to give Concordia its largest lead of the game, 11 points. Aina Kohler of Concordia scored a game-high 23 points. Becki Huddle and Kelly Boeke had 14 and 12 points, respectively, for host Vanguard (14-9, 7-7), which drops behind Concordia (12-13, 8-6) in the GSAC standings.
In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:
Long Beach State 3, UC Irvine 2--Underdog UC Irvine, ranked 14th in the nation, put a scare into No. 3 Long Beach State before winning, 30-22, 30-23, 31-33, 26-30, 15-12.
The 49ers easily won the first two games, but the Anteaters fought off a match point in the third to win and force a fourth game. The teams fought evenly in the fourth game until UC Irvine edged ahead.
In the fifth game, the teams were tied, 7-7, when the 49ers took control with three straight points.
Long Beach’s David McKienzie had a match-high 35 kills with 11 digs. Ty Loomis had 29 kills for UC Irvine.
