Flintridge Prep had all the motivation it needed in a Division V semifinal game.

What it didn’t have was home field advantage, and that proved to be the Rebels’ downfall in a loss to top-seeded Brentwood on a muddy field at Veterans Administration Hospital.

The fourth-seeded Rebels were unable to gain redemption for last season’s quarterfinal loss to the same team on the same field.

“I think the field conditions [Tuesday] hurt us more than them,” said Coach Tim Morphy of Flintridge Prep. “We rely on our speed and running into open spaces. They are more of a ball control team that feeds off of their passing.

“If they did anything better than us, it was that they got to the balls faster than we did.”

Flintridge Prep’s only previous loss was to Pasadena Poly in Prep League play and the Rebels (23-2-4) defeated each of the other three semifinal teams, including Brentwood, earlier in the season.

This time, the Eagles took the lead on Meghan McIntosh’s goal in the 20th minute.

“I’d be lying if I said the poor conditions didn’t play a factor,” Brentwood Coach David Foote said. “It was a question of which team would adjust better.

“We threw precision soccer out the window and just went to booming balls as far as we could.”

Jennai Taylor and Jenny Rowland of Flintridge Prep, both 20-goal scorers, managed only three shots between them.

Goalie Kate Boswell made 16 saves but slipped while trying to grab a rebound, allowing McIntosh to score her second goal of the game and 33rd of the season with five minutes left.

Brentwood (24-4-2) has outscored its opposition, 100-7, this season and goalie Catherine Levenson recorded her 22nd shutout.
