Opera Pacific to Produce ‘Onegin,’ Its 1st Russian Work
Opera Pacific will produce its first Russian opera, Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin,” as part of its 2001-2002 season at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa.
The season also will include the Southern California premiere of Jake Heggie’s “Dead Man Walking,” which was first presented at San Francisco Opera in October. Frederica von Stade will reprise her role as the mother of convicted murderer Joseph De Rocher.
New productions of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” and Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” are planned. The 2001-2002 season will conclude the Santa Ana-based company’s Verdi centennial celebration (which begins this month), with a production of “Rigoletto” and a Verdi program at an outdoor “Festa Italiana” in Laguna Beach.
In association with the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Opera Pacific will also present soprano Renee Fleming and bass Samuel Ramey on its third Voices in Song Series, in March and April.
The 2001-2002 Opera Pacific season begins in September and ends in May. For complete season description and subscription information: (800) 346-7372.
