Bonk Has Six Points in Win
Radek Bonk and the Ottawa Senators got all the bounces.
Bonk had his first hat trick and added three assists for a career-high six points as the Ottawa Senators defeated Tampa Bay, 8-3, Thursday night at Ottawa.
Bonk’s six points matched the Senators’ single-game record set by Dan Quinn on Oct. 15, 1995, also against Tampa Bay.
“I had my pregame nap, and I woke up and I felt great,” Bonk said. “I haven’t felt like that in a long time and it just went good from there. A couple of lucky bounces and I ended up with six points. That was a good night.”
Marian Hossa, Bonk’s linemate, had a team-record five assists and defenseman Wade Redden scored twice for the Senators, who won their second consecutive at home after a six-game winless streak.
“Sometimes you get a breakaway or an open net and you don’t score,” Bonk said. “Sometimes, just like today, the bounces go your way. We capitalized on our chances.”
San Jose 2, Colorado 2--Ray Bourque scored the tying goal at 5:45 of the third period at Denver.
In a battle of division leaders, Colorado had a 40-21 edge in shots and also had a power-play opportunity in overtime, but Steve Shields stopped all four Avalanche shots during the man advantage.
Shields had 38 saves, while Patrick Roy had 19.
Phoenix 3, New York Rangers 1--Sean Burke stopped 34 shots for the Coyotes at Phoenix.
Burke has given up only one goal in two victories over the Rangers this season.
The victory was the first in five games for the Coyotes (1-2-2). The Rangers are winless in their last six games (0-6), and are 1-9-1 in their last 11.
The game marked the return of Phoenix forward Brad May, who was suspended for 20 games for slashing Columbus’ Steve Heinze on Nov. 11. May drew fighting and instigating penalties, as well as a 10-minute misconduct, 3:56 into the first period.
Nashville 4, St. Louis 2--Richard Lintner and Cliff Ronning ended goal slumps at St. Louis as the Predators stopped Blues’ goalie Brent Johnson’s seven-game win streak.
Lintner hadn’t scored in 15 games before getting his second of the season in the first period. Ronning got his first goal in 11 games, his 13th overall, when he deflected Lintner’s drive from the point in the second for a 2-0 lead.
Johnson, the rookie backup to Roman Turek who entered with an NHL-leading 1.47 goals-against average, fell to 14-2. He has had two seven-game win streaks, each time tying a franchise record shared by three others.
Detroit 4, Dallas 2--Pat Verbeek scored two goals to move into 25th place on the career goal-scoring list as the Red Wings won at Detroit.
Verbeek passed former Montreal great Jean Beliveau, who played from 1950-71, with 508 goals.
New Jersey 4, New York Islanders 2--Alexander Mogilny had his 15th career hat trick at East Rutherford, N.J., as the Devils extended their unbeaten streak to eight games.
John Madden also scored for the Devils, who are 6-0-2 in their last eight and winners of 15 of their last 22 games (15-3-4).
