Lutheran Topples Defending Champ
Orange Lutheran put defending Olympic League champion Brethren Christian on the defensive, and the Lancers outplayed the Warriors and won the league opener, 3-0, in a girls’ soccer game Thursday at Orange Lutheran.
Natalie Tankersley, Ashley Phipps and Rachel Gerling scored for the host Lancers (11-3-3 overall), and senior goalkeeper Laura Miklos recorded her 10th shutout.
Brethren Christian goalkeeper Stephanie Boyadjian made 24 saves.
“[Orange Lutheran] had size and speed, and played a very aggressive game,” Brethren Coach Nancy Patrick said. “Our girls played a great game but scrambled. We had a couple of attack opportunities but not much in the way of shots on goal.”
Brethren Christian (5-1-1) has a young roster, with only one junior and two seniors along with seven sophomores and five freshmen.
Said Orange Lutheran Coach Del Montell: “Our team is so improved over last year it’s just a night-and-day difference.”
The Lancers lost only three players to graduation from last year’s team, and returned 10 starters.
