Ojai Valley Adventist Sermon Series

* Pastor David Smith of Ojai Valley Adventist Church will begin a new sermon series today, “Your Most Radical Decision.” The first installment is titled “The Gospel According to Vincent Lombardi,” the late Green Bay Packers coach. A luncheon will follow the worship service.

Services are held at 10:45 a.m. each Saturday and include contemporary and traditional Christian music. Bible study begins at 9:30 a.m.

* Senior Pastor William Colburn will deliver the sermon “Making Marriage Work” today at Ventura Seventh-day Adventist Church. A vegetarian potluck fellowship meal will follow the worship service.

St. Demetrios’ Dockside Service

* St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Camarillo will celebrate the annual “Blessing of the Waters” on Sunday at Ventura Harbor Village. Divine liturgy will be held at the church at 10 a.m. Congregants will then caravan to the harbor for the dockside ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Led by Rev. Cyril Loeb and visiting Orthodox priests, the ceremony will conclude with throwing a wooden cross into the harbor. Several Orthodox youth will attempt to retrieve the cross. The child who succeeds will receive a special blessing from the priests.

The ceremony will be followed by a fund-raising luncheon at the Greek restaurant, located at the harbor, where Greek dance groups will entertain.

Sherlock Holmes and Religion

* The Rev. Betty Stapleford will deliver the sermon “We See, but We Do Not Observe” Sunday at Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Inspired by the Stephen Kendrick book, “Holy Clues, The Gospel According to Sherlock Holmes,” the sermon will focus on the writing of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle “as it integrates the spiritual paths of Zen Buddhism and Western religious traditions.” The service will begin at 10 a.m.

* Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Thousand Oaks on Wednesday evening will begin an eight-week course designed to introduce the basics of the Christian faith. Titled “ALPHA,” the weekly sessions will include dinner, a short video presentation, small group meetings and question-and-answer sessions. Courses will be held each Wednesday from 6:30-9 p.m. The course work is designed to appeal to those who are curious to know why Jesus Christ is considered to be the Messiah.

Life Design Ojai Winter Session

* Women are invited to attend the winter session of Life Design Ojai, which begins at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at Ojai Valley Community Church.

Life Design meets each Wednesday through March 14. The winter study topic is “A Way to Win: Aligning Attitudes,” written by Christine Wood.

In addition to the study, Life Design will offer a parenting class, a craft class, an exercise class and a time for women to get caught up on their small projects.
