The U.S. Davis Cup team will have a slightly younger look against Switzerland in the first round, Feb. 9-11, at Basel, Switzerland. Captain Patrick McEnroe, who will be making his debut, selected veterans Todd Martin, Jan-Michael Gambill and Justin Gimelstob and 18-year-old newcomer Andy Roddick.

Australian Open champion Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras have said they will not be playing Davis Cup, voicing displeasure with the format.

Martin defeated Sampras in the fourth round of the Australian Open and lost to Agassi in the quarterfinals. Although Gambill lost in the first round to countryman Chris Woodruff, McEnroe still selected him. He also had discussions with his brother John, last year’s U.S. Davis Cup captain, who said he was ready to play doubles.

“I think he understands that we need to look to the future,” Patrick said. “He was very supportive of my decision.”
