Jaguares is the only Latin band that wholeheartedly embraces the spirit of classic arena rock and gets away with it. Its third album is probably its best, thanks to the intensity of singer-songwriter Saul Hernandez, the messianic sincerity of his paper-thin voice and the naturalness with which he uses a Cuban tumbao or a son jarocho guitaron as textural additions to his morbid mood palette of mysterious grays, bloody reds and the darkest of blues. Densely layered, crunchy and theatrical, this is commercial rock of the highest order. Jaguares plays the Roxy on Aug. 4.
