Johnson Looks Strikingly Similar

Randy Johnson combined on a one-hitter against San Diego for the second time in six days, and Luis Gonzalez homered twice to reach 40 as the Arizona Diamondbacks routed the Padres, 11-0, Tuesday night at Phoenix.

Johnson (13-5) gave up a first-inning single by Bubba Trammell and struck out 14 in 7 1/3 innings, including six in a row. He increased his major league-leading strikeout total to 239 and retired his final 16 batters.

Troy Brohawn got two outs and Erik Sabel pitched the ninth to complete the one-hitter.

Last Thursday, Johnson struck out 16 in seven innings of relief against San Diego, completing a suspended game begun a day earlier by Curt Schilling.

Johnson, 7-0 against San Diego, has 16 double-digit strikeout games in 21 starts and one relief appearance this year and 164 in his career, second only to Nolan Ryan’s 215.

Gonzalez is two homers behind San Francisco’s Barry Bonds, the major league leader. Gonzalez leads the major leagues with 99 runs batted in, one ahead of the Cubs’ Sammy Sosa.

Arizona remained a half-game ahead of second-place Dodgers in the National League West and stopped San Diego’s five-game winning streak.

Gonzalez hit a three-run homer off Kevin Jarvis (7-8) in the sixth and a two-run shot off David Lee in the seventh. Gonzalez has eight multihomer games this year and 16 in his career.

Chicago 10, Pittsburgh 2--Sosa homered, doubled and drove in five runs at Chicago.

Sosa, who went four for four, hit a two-run single that capped Chicago’s five-run second inning, doubled in two runs in a three-run fourth and hit his 34th homer off Omar Olivares in the sixth.

Julian Tavarez (7-6) won for the first time in five starts since June 25, giving up six hits in seven innings. The Cubs, who maintained a three-game lead over second-place Houston in the NL Central, had 17 hits, including at least one from every starter.

Todd Ritchie (6-10) gave up eight runs and 12 hits in four innings.

Houston 2, St. Louis 1--Wade Miller (12-5) gave up two hits in eight innings at St. Louis--one of them Mark McGwire’s 13th homer this season and 567th of his career.

Billy Wagner pitched the ninth for his 23rd save, and 17th in a row.

Houston scored twice in the third off Matt Morris (12-6), whose error played a key role in the inning. Craig Biggio’s single drove home one run, and Jeff Bagwell’s sacrifice fly drove home the other.

Philadelphia 10, Montreal 2--Nelson Figueroa (2-2) gave up two runs in 7 2/3 innings and had three hits at Philadelphia, and Tomas Perez homered from each side of the plate for the first multihomer game his career.

Travis Lee added a three-run homer in a six-run third inning and Scott Rolen had three RBIs for the Phillies, who won for just the fifth time in 13 games since the all-star break and closed within one game of first-place Atlanta in the NL East.

Tony Armas Jr. (8-9) gave up six runs and eight hits in three innings.

Cincinnati 11, Atlanta 3--Aaron Boone and Jason LaRue each drove in three runs to lead the Reds at Atlanta.

John Burkett (7-8) gave up seven runs--four earned--in six innings. The right-hander’s ERA rose from a league-leading 2.38 to 2.51.

Burkett had gone 14 starts without giving up four earned runs. He gave up a season-high five earned runs in an 8-0 loss at Florida on April 7 and gave up four earned runs in a no-decision on opening day and a 5-0 loss to Milwaukee on May 3.

Jim Brower (5-7) won his first start since April 24, giving up two runs and six hits in six innings.

Florida 4, New York 3--Reliever Ricky Bones (3-3) struck out Mike Piazza in pitching out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam to protect a one-run lead in the fifth inning at Miami.

Florida scored four runs in the second against Kevin Appier (5-10), who departed after two innings because of a sore hip.

Marlin starter Chuck Smith left in the fifth complaining of pain in his pitching right elbow.

Antonio Alfonseca completed the six-hitter, pitching the ninth for his 19th save.

Colorado 6, San Francisco 4--Todd Helton homered and drove in two runs and the Rockies capitalized on one error, two passed balls and one wild pitch at Denver.

Rockies’ rookie Shawn Chacon (6-5) gave up three runs and six hits in five innings, surviving five walks to beat Shawn Estes (7-5). Jose Jimenez pitched the ninth for his 13th save.

Barry Bonds went one for three with a double, two flyouts and a walk on his 37th birthday.
