Six Matadors Pitch In to Beat Westmont on Two-Hitter, 8-0
Six pitchers combined on a two-hitter and Cal State Northridge defeated Westmont, 8-0, in a nonconference baseball game Friday at Northridge.
Bill Murphy (3-0) allowed one hit and struck out three in the first three innings.
Andy Davidson followed with three strikeouts in two innings for Northridge (10-6).
Kameron Loe, Merrill Dunn, Ryan McDermott and Mike Frick each pitched an inning.
Northridge pitchers struck out 10.
Left fielder Tim Coltey hit his first home run of the season, finishing with two hits and four runs batted in for the Matadors.
First baseman Tim Arroyo had two hits and catcher Jason Allec had a run-scoring single.
Kevin McFadden and Noel Peipgrass had hits for Westmont (6-8).
Pepperdine 10, Portland 1--Danny Garcia hit a grand slam in the eighth inning of a West Coast Conference opener at Portland.
Tony Garcia and Rock Mills hit two-run home runs for No. 10-ranked Pepperdine (11-2), which defeated Portland (4-6) for the 17th consecutive time.
Dan Haren (4-0) allowed eight hits, struck out six and walked three in eight innings.
Citrus 13, Canyons 3--Brandon Medrano hit three home runs and drove in six runs in a Western State Conference Southern Division game at Canyons.
Scott Sellz gave Canyons (4-8-1, 0-1 in conference play) a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the second inning.
Cal Lutheran 9, Redlands 3--Scott Courneya (2-2) pitched an eight-hitter and struck out seven in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Cal Lutheran.
Jeff Meyers of Cal Lutheran (5-4, 4-0) had three hits and two RBIs.
SOFTBALL
Antelope Valley 3, Mt. San Jacinto 0--Marciea Ball pitched a five-hitter for the Marauders (7-2) in a Foothill Conference opener at Mt. San Jacinto.
Katy Gonzalez had a home run for Antelope Valley.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Cal State Northridge def. Pacific, 30-23, 30-20, 30-24--Eckhard Walter had 13 kills and the Matadors won a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Northridge.
Ozer Ozkaya had 12 kills for Northridge (4-12, 1-10).
