KVEA-TV Reports Resignation of News Director

Just eight months after he was brought on to revamp news coverage at KVEA-TV Channel 52, J. Victor Abalos resigned as the station’s news director Friday. The announcement from Fernando Lopez, KVEA’s vice president and general manager, did not provide an explanation for the sudden departure, nor did it contain any indication of Abalos’ future plans. He has been on medical leave since early February. During his time at the station, Abalos doubled the number of newscasts and began assembling an investigative team. His own investigative work has appeared on KCAL-TV Channel 9 and PBS’ “The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer.” Lopez will serve as KVEA’s news director until a replacement for Abalos is found.
