The government of Ivory Coast said it had struck a deal with leading pharmaceutical companies to slash the price of AIDS treatment.

An official said Merck & Co., Glaxo-SmithKline and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. had agreed to cut the price of antiretroviral drugs by 80% to 90%. The move comes as the pharmaceutical industry is embroiled in a fierce legal battle with the government of South Africa over access to cheap drugs.
