Eight From Region Selected All-State
Four men and four women were among the basketball players from the region selected to the junior college all-state tournament teams.
Guards Devin Montgomery of Moorpark and Michael Schnyder of Glendale, center Lester Strong of Moorpark and forward Desmond Penigar of Ventura were selected to the men’s first team.
Center Michael Crawford of Valley and forward Jimmy White of Antelope Valley received honorable mention.
Guards Kelly Murray and Monique Taylor of Ventura and Vonetta Lanier of Canyons were selected to the women’s first team.
Guard Michelle Tompkins of Valley was selected to the second team. Guard Marilyn Dubon of Glendale was selected to the All-Southern California Region women’s team.

Murray’s selection as most valuable player in the women’s championships at Stockton last weekend was the second consecutive time and the fourth time in six seasons a Ventura guard received the award.
The others were Renae Hofmann last season, Amirah Leonard in 1997 and Marina Torres-Reyes in 1996.

By guiding Ventura to the women’s title on Saturday at Stockton, Coach Ned Mircetic tied Jerry Tarkanian for most state championships by a coach.
Ventura also won in 2000, 1997 and 1996.
Tarkanian, the Fresno State men’s coach, won men’s championships from 1964-66 with Riverside City and in 1967 with Pasadena City.
