Burnett Perfect in Pomona Victory

LaTasha Burnett tied an NCAA record and scored 24 points Wednesday night to lead Cal Poly Pomona to a 74-54 victory over Pace University of New York in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II women’s basketball tournament at Rochester, Minn.

Burnett, a 5-foot-5 senior point guard, made all 11 of her shots, matching a Division II tournament record set in 1989 by another Cal Poly Pomona player, Cathy Gooden.

Pomona (25-3) advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 1990, when it finished third. The 12th-ranked Broncos will face top-ranked Columbus (Ga.) State (31-0) tonight in the semifinals.

Adelphi’s bid for a perfect season ended in the NCAA Division II men’s quarterfinals with an 82-68 loss to Tampa at Bakersfield.

Elijah Piazza scored 19 points for Tampa (25-6), which will face Kentucky Wesleyan (28-6) in the semifinals tonight.

Ryan McCormack led Adelphi (31-1) with 22 points.

Greg Harrington floated in a five-foot shot from the baseline with 2.6 seconds remaining to give Tulsa (24-11) a 77-75 victory over Mississippi State (18-13) at Starkville, Miss., in the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament.

Derrick Zimmerman made a three-point shot as the clock expired that would have sent the Bulldogs to the semifinals in New York, but the shot left his hands just after the buzzer sounded.

Mississippi State Coach Rick Stansbury immediately ran to the referees after Zimmerman’s shot was waved off and requested they check a courtside replay. The replay confirmed the call on the floor.

At Dayton, Ohio, Rashad Phillips scored 23 points to lead Detroit (25-10) into Tuesday’s semifinals with a 59-42 victory over Dayton (21-13).

Jordan Adams scored 20 points to lead New Mexico (21-12) to a 77-55 victory over Alabama Birmingham (20-11) at Albuquerque in the quarterfinals of the women’s NIT.

New Mexico advanced to the semifinals against the winner of the Hawaii-Oklahoma State game, which was played late Wednesday night.
