Mom, Teach Your Kids to Weed
Well, now the secret is out! Is there not one sacred weed left from my childhood? I loved the article (‘The Dandelion Story: Out of the Lawn and Into the Pot,” March 21).
I grew up in Ohio in the ‘50s and ‘60s and pulled many a dandelion green for my grandmother. We kids hated pulling greens! We usually mixed them with other greens and boiled them until they were well past limp. I hear that the yellow dandelion flowers make a good wine. That part of the plant didn’t get passed down to my generation.
Other greens from the yard included lamb’s-quarters and poke. We always had a full vegetable garden, but it always seemed special to get thesefree.
