Matter, Sciarra to Play in Valley All-Star Game

Quarterbacks Kyle Matter of Hart High and John Sciarra of St. Francis top the players selected for the Valley Youth Conference East-West All-Star football game June 3 at 5 p.m. at Birmingham High.

Ed Croson of Birmingham will coach the West, with Jeff Engilman of Sylmar coaching the East.

Among Matter’s receiving targets on the West team will be James Norris of Kennedy, Larry Viltz of Crespi, Joey Rodriguez of Granada Hills, Andrew Petersen of L.A. Baptist, Will Broadus of Valencia and Kevin Donoho of Hart.

The West defense includes Kaelen Jakes of Valencia, Pete Dubsky, Evan Allen and Kyle Hollis of Hart and Lee Marks of Taft.

Sciarra and quarterback John Valdez of Sylmar will have an excellent group of East running backs, led by Gary Sonkur of Montclair Prep, Perry Clayton of Grant, Matt Milton of St. Francis and Bob Stanley of San Fernando.

Among East receivers are Jason Hogan and Jason Burkhart of Crescenta Valley, Keith Jarbo of Burroughs, Mike Luderer of Notre Dame, Brett Mitchell of St. Francis and Felipe Samano of Sylmar.

Linebacker is an East strength, with Nathan Terrazone of St. Francis, Colin MacNeil of Canyon, Josh Martin of Sylmar, Greg Root of Highland and Tom Curiel of Notre Dame.

SWIMMING

* Anthony Ervin, formerly of Hart High, won the men’s 100-meter freestyle in 48.98 seconds Friday at the Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships in Austin, Texas.

Senior Maureen Farrell of Alemany High placed fifth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.77 Thursday.

Mark Warkentin of USC and Buenaventura Swim Club of Oxnard was sixth in the 400 freestyle in 3:54.52 on Wednesday.

BASKETBALL

* Joe Vaughan of Buena High has been selected to coach in the Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Assn./Nike All-Star game for girls on April 7 in Hartford, Conn.

Buena guard Courtney Young, who is headed for Tennessee, will play in the game, which will be televised by ESPN2.

* Erin Buescher of The Master’s College has been named National Christian College Athletic Assn. player of the year. The senior guard averaged 17.6 points and 9.3 rebounds.
