Re “Placentia’s Not Whistling a Happy Tune,” April 3:

Now that the trains through Placentia are sounding their whistles again, the people living near the tracks are upset at the noise. It seems that the only way they can solve the problem is to make underpasses or overpasses at each of the major streets and block off the other ones from through traffic.

The city could budget to do one at a time, and before too long, they could all be done and the noise eliminated, as trains would not have to blow the whistle at these streets.

* So, the railroads are pushing the city of Placentia to let the whistles blow because of safety concerns. The city wants to lower the tracks, but is some $368 million short of the funds to do so. It seems to me that the railroads ought to be willing to come up with the money because they are the ones making a profit from them. Makes one wonder if Placentia’s city managers aren’t assisting the railroads in putting the squeeze on taxpayers to foot the bill.
