Police Disperse Rally Against President
From Times Wire Reports
Police fired tear gas at opponents of President Frederick Chiluba rallying in Lusaka, Zambia’s capital, and the crowd responded by stoning government vehicles. One man was killed when he was hit by a car.
The political scene has been tense since Chiluba appeared to be moving to run for a third term, which is barred by the constitution. After fierce opposition, he announced late Friday that he would not run.
The president’s opponents say Chiluba is still hoping for a referendum that would enable him to run again once he has vacated his post.
