* Last year: Australia’s Karrie Webb won at the Merit Club in Gurnee, Ill., beating Cristie Kerr and Meg Mallon by five strokes. The victory capped a run of three wins in four majors.

* Last week: Sweden’s Carin Koch won her first LPGA title, beating compatriot Maria Hjorth and Scotland’s Mhairi McKay by two strokes in the Corning Classic.

* Notes: Annika Sorenstam won the 1996 tournament at Pine Needles, becoming only the sixth woman to win consecutive titles. The Swede has five victories in 10 starts this year. She became the first woman to shoot a 59 in tournament play, and won the Nabisco Championship the following week for her first major title since her six-stroke victory at Pine Needles. . . . Morgan Pressel, 13, of Boca Raton, Fla., is the youngest competitor since Beverly Klass played in the 1967 tournament at 10. She shot a 70 in West Palm Beach to qualify. . . . Brenda Corrie Kuehn, a 36-year-old qualifier, is eight months pregnant. . . . The 2002 tournament will be played at Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, Kan.

* Last year: Hale Irwin won the second of four 2000 titles, beating Gil Morgan by a stroke. Irwin matched the tournament record of 18-under 198.

* Last week: Tom Watson won the Senior PGA Championship, closing with a 67 for a one-stroke victory over Jim Thorpe at Ridgewood in Paramus, N.J.

* Notes: Larry Nelson, seeking his third victory of the year, designed the Springhouse course. The scenic layout borders bluffs and 90-foot cliffs along the Cumberland River. . . .
