Matadors Escape With a Victory

Quarterback Marcus Brady passed for a pair of touchdowns and rushed for two others Saturday to lead visiting Cal State Northridge to a 35-28 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

The Matadors (3-6) took a 35-14 lead on a 10-yard touchdown run by Alan Taylor late in the third quarter, but Cal Poly (5-4) pulled to within 35-28 when Chris Peterson connected with Adam Herzing on a 43-yard touchdown pass with 12 minutes to play.

The comeback bid ended when the Mustangs committed turnovers on their last two possessions.

Brady completed 22 of 40 passes for 375 yards, including touchdown strikes of seven yards to Drew Amerson in the second quarter and 16 yards to D.J. Hackett in the third.

Occidental 24, Redlands 17--Renaldo Pacheco caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Paopao with 8:22 to play, breaking a 17-17 tie and clinching the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship for host Occidental.

Paopao completed 17 of 28 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers (7-1, 5-0). Clay Groefsema passed for 239 yards and rushed for two touchdowns for Redlands (5-3, 3-2).

Pasadena 51, Cerritos 12--Jonathan Smith set Mission Conference records for single-game rushing and all-purpose yards and set a school record for touchdowns help Pasadena ( 8-1, 3-1) kept its Northern Division title hopes alive.

Smith rushed for 353 yards and five touchdowns in 34 carries and caught five passes for 102 yards and a touchdown. He also returned two kickoffs returns for 60 yards for a total of 515 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns.
