2 Ceremonies Mourn Flight 587 Victims
Mourners from New York and the Dominican Republic gathered in ceremonies to grieve for the passengers of American Airlines Flight 587, the Dominican Republic-bound airliner that crashed shortly after takeoff.
New York’s outdoor, interfaith ceremony took place at Jacob Riis Park, about two miles from the crash site on the oceanfront Rockaway Peninsula of Queens. The 1,000 mourners included Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, Gov. George Pataki and Sens. Charles E. Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton.
About 1,500 miles away, 100 people crowded into the tiny Altagracia Catholic Church in Ojo de Agua, Dominican Republic.
