Huntington Beach Edison 47, La Puente Bishop Amat 14--AJ Martinez returned a kickoff for a touchdown, caught one of quarterback Tommy Grady’s five touchdown passes, and rushed for another score to help the Chargers demolish Bishop Amat in a Division I quarterfinal at Orange Coast College.
Martinez scored the first of Edison’s five first-half touchdowns when he took the opening kickoff 88 yards for a score. His two second-half touchdowns came after Bishop Amat (9-2) had scored twice to cut its deficit to 33-14.
Martinez caught a pass from Grady for a 15-yard scoring play to give the Chargers (10-0-1) a 40-14 lead with nine seconds left in the third quarter. Martinez added a 37-yard scoring run after Bishop Amat turned the ball over on downs early in the fourth quarter. Martinez finished with 71 yards rushing and also had one of four interceptions for Edison, which advances to play Mater Dei in a Division I semifinal next weekend.
Grady completed 14 of 18 passes for 230 yards and five touchdowns. Denny Flanagan caught scoring passes of 40 and 10 yards, and Chucky Linman scored on receptions of 15 and seven yards for Edison.
