Warning of difficult times ahead, President Bush told Americans they have much to be thankful for and should take heart from their response to the Sept. 11 attacks.

“The fight we have begun will not be quickly or easily finished,” said Bush, touching on the war in Afghanistan and the possibility that the anti-terrorism campaign may expand to other countries.

“Our enemies hide and plot in many nations; they are devious and ruthless,” the president said in his weekly radio address. “Yet we are confident in the justice of our cause. We will fight for as long as it takes, and we will prevail.”

In the United States, he said, “the evil the terrorists intended has resulted in good they never expected. And this holiday season, Americans have much to be thankful for.”

He praised Americans for their charitable acts and cited efforts to help the hundreds of thousands of Afghans at risk of starvation.

Bush recorded the radio address at Camp David, in western Maryland, where he spent the Thanksgiving weekend with his family. Before returning to the White House, the president and his wife, Laura, planned to celebrate with twin daughters Jenna and Barbara, who turn 20 today.
