Up to 165 College District Workers Facing Layoffs
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The Kern Community College District may lay off as many as 165 employees to comply with a law that requires it to spend at least half of its budget on teaching salaries.
The district was penalized $2.5 million by the state for being out of compliance during the 1999-2000 school year and is trying to prevent a similar penalty. In its last estimate, the district spent 46% of its budget on teaching salaries.
