Robber Dies in Shootout With Victims
A 19-year-old man who allegedly tried to rob two couples at gunpoint early Friday was fatally shot after the would-be victims drew weapons of their own, police said.
Juan Carlos Diaz of Santa Ana died from gunshot wounds at UCI Medical Center in Orange.
Police said Diaz and another man approached two couples on Rosewood Street about 1 a.m. and asked for cigarettes. Diaz and the other suspect then pulled handguns and demanded money, said Officer Mario Carona.
The victims also pulled out handguns, and a shootout ensued. Both holdup victims were shot but not fatally injured. They were still hospitalized late Friday.
Police found two guns at the scene. They are searching for the other suspect, who fled.
