KCET Keeps Appointment in D.C.
While network fall programming was being shuffled because of last week’s tragic events, KCET at press time was planning to go ahead with an evening of programs set in Washington.
First up tonight, at 8, is “In Performance at the White House,” a one-hour concert taped July 30 in which President and Laura Bush salute the history of the U.S. Marine Band, which also is known as “The President’s Own,” on its 200th anniversary of performing at the White House. The program includes anecdotes and historical references to the band’s history of performances--from 1801, when it was invited by President John Adams to play in the first White House New Year’s Day reception, to the present. The evening also features performances by Toby Keith (“Heart to Heart”), Nell Carter (“The Battle Hymn of the Republic”) and Larry Gatlin (“God Bless America”).
At 9 p.m., “West Wing” star Martin Sheen serves as host of “Echoes From the White House,” a documentary offering a tour of the First Residence and a look at its history via the personal letters, memoirs and diaries of presidents, first ladies, staff members, dignitaries and other eyewitnesses. Their words--as read by actors Philip Bosco, Avery Brooks, Blythe Danner, Regina Taylor, Sam Waterston and Dianne Wiest--reveal stories both public and private.
At 10 p.m., the evening concludes with “The Press Secretary,” a program in which filmmaker Theodore Bogosian tracks former Clinton White House press secretary Joe Lockhart for three days in September 2000. It also follows the administration during an informal Oval Office press conference and preparation for a daily briefing by Lockhart and his staff.
