Bevins’ Three Late Goals Good Enough for Servite

Vince Bevins scored all three of his goals in the final quarter and Servite, ranked No. 2 in The Times’ regional rankings, defeated third-ranked Foothill, 6-5, in a quarterfinal of the South Coast water polo tournament at El Dorado High.

Bevins’ game-winner with 22 seconds remaining propelled the Friars into a semifinal today against top-ranked Corona del Mar.

The Sea Kings, led by Artie Dorr’s four goals and John Mann’s four assists, defeated Long Beach Wilson, 10-4, in another quarterfinal.

Brent Danna scored five goals to lead El Toro to an 11-7 victory over Newport Harbor.

In girls’ tennis:

Harvard-Westlake 11, Brentwood 7--Freshman Amber Harper, playing No. 1 singles for Harvard-Westlake because of the absence of top players Alexandra Maclennan and Jessica Leck, dropped only one game while sweeping three sets for the Wolverines in a nonleague victory at Brentwood.

Maclennan and Leck were out of town on recruiting visits, but Harper won, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

Harvard-Westlake (1-0), ranked ninth in The Times’ regional poll, broke a 6-6 tie by winning five of six sets in the last round of round-robin competition.

The No. 1 doubles team of Alex Rogers and Stephanie Marlis swept, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2, for Brentwood (2-1).

Calabasas 13, Newbury Park 5--No. 1 singles player Monica Wiesener was sidelined because of a wrist injury but the Coyotes (4-1) defeated Newbury Park in a nonleague match at Calabasas.

Calabasas freshman Amanda Fink won three sets by 6-0 scores and sophomore Celia Durkin and junior Erin Everly each won their sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

St. Lucy’s 10, Chaminade 8--Top singles player Jennifer Segar won three sets, but Chaminade (4-2) lost a nonleague match against St. Lucy’s (5-0) at Citrus College.

Dana Hills 10, Santa Barbara 8--Kady Pooler, who usually plays No. 1 singles for Dana Hills, moved to doubles and teamed with two different partners to sweep three sets in a nonleague victory at Santa Barbara. Dana Hills (4-2) has won three consecutive matches since going 1-2 to open the season.

In girls’ volleyball:

Westlake def. La Reina, 15-6, 15-3, 15-13--Katie Meledy had 16 kills, 18 digs and two blocks for Westlake (3-0).
