BIG WINNERS

* Gardena Serra defeated Los Angeles Cathedral, 25-14. It was the Phantoms’ first regular-season loss in four years.

* Anaheim Esperanza’s Shaun Wildenstein and Twentynine Palms’ Marcus Lampkin each had 44 carries in their teams’ victories.

Wildenstein gained 313 yards and scored three touchdowns in a 20-10 victory over Fallbrook.

Lampkin gained 208 yards and scored twice in a 28-27 win over El Centro Southwest.

* Albert Griffin of Mission Hills Alemany carried 43 times for 292 yards and two touchdowns in a 40-35 victory over West Hills Chaminade.

* Dustin Sober of Fullerton rushed for two touchdowns, returned a fumble 25 yards for a touchdown, recorded two sacks and recovered another fumble in a 48-13 victory over Bellflower.

* A.J. Martinez of Huntington Beach Edison returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown, kicked a 22-yard field goal and blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for another touchdown in the Chargers’ 51-26 win over Dana Hills.

UPSETS

* Lawndale Leuzinger defeated Los Alamitos, 28-21.

Victor McClendon, suspended by Coach Mike Whitt last week for a 25-0 loss to Tustin, rushed for 185 yards in 27 carries and scored on a 59-yard touchdown pass and an 11-yard run to bring the Olympians back from a 21-12 deficit.

* Fremont beat San Pedro, 6-3.

Mike Ruiz’s 24-yard field goal on the final play came shortly after Milvon James broke loose on an 82-yard run. Fremont is regarded as a talented team, but the Pathfinders’ win at San Pedro stunned not only the Pirate faithful but most City Section coaches as well.

ACROSS THE NATION

* It looked for all the world like a blowout in the making. Instead, an improbable rally and five dramatic overtimes made it a game for the record book.

By the time Annandale (Va.) High completed its comeback for a 68-67 victory against Westfield on Friday night at Chantilly, Va., sealing the victory when Carey Edwards blocked an extra point, it was the highest-scoring game involving two Virginia teams.

“We’ve never had a game like that,” said Annandale Coach Dick Adams, whose team trailed, 33-17, entering the fourth quarter but tied it on Kahl Lombardi’s four-yard run and Monte Moyer’s two-point conversion run with 51 seconds left in regulation.

After a 47-yard field goal try with 1.7 seconds left fell just short for Westfield, the teams went to overtime.

Virginia’s rules give each team the ball at the 10-yard line and allow them four downs to score. Four times, the teams traded touchdowns and extra point kicks.
