Ackerman Says He Opposes El Toro Airport
After five years of neutrality on the issue, state Sen. Dick Ackerman (R-Tustin) Monday announced his opposition to plans for an airport at the closed El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.
“I have a great deal of respect for the various opinions that I have encountered from informed and thoughtful people on both sides,” Ackerman said in a written statement. “However, I have come to the conclusion that the planning process for El Toro is flawed. Public support for the airport has steadily eroded, and there are no compelling arguments for a second Orange County airport.”
Ackerman said he is convinced that a non-aviation use for El Toro is in the best interests of Orange County residents and all of Southern California.
