HIV Cases Increase by 17%, Government Says
From Times Wire Reports
The Chinese government announced a 17% increase in the number of Chinese infected with HIV since mid-2001 and sharply raised its estimate of the virus’ spread.
The report said that as many as 850,000 people could be infected with the HIV virus, which causes AIDS, and that 100,000 might have died of the disease.
The report noted that authorities believe that China’s official AIDS statistics are far lower than the true figure because of poor reporting by local health officials.
