Wildlands Conservancy Benefits Our Youth
“A Quiet Broker of the Wild,” your April 24 article regarding the Wildlands Conservancy, didn’t cover one of the major benefits that Wildlands provides to Southern California. In addition to purchasing vacant land, Wildlands is also dedicated to enhancing the lives of disadvantaged, at-risk urban youth through profound, yet fun, outdoor camping and outdoor education programs.
To date, Wildlands has provided funding for over 140,000 children. These less-fortunate youths experience the wondrous world beyond their neighborhoods when they participate, at no cost, in a Wildlands program. Many of them have never been out of their own, often dangerous, neighborhoods. In the outdoor environment, they learn there are other worlds, options and choices available to them. Children who participate in the programs are encouraged to return and hopefully advance to camp counselor positions.
