Hosseini, 14, Advances at Surfing Championships
Erica Hosseini, who will be a sophomore at Newport Harbor High in the fall, won her heat Wednesday in the women’s division at the Philips U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach.
Hosseini, 14, who became the youngest surfer to reach a final of an Assn. of Surfing Professionals event when she finished second in April at Trestles in San Clemente, advanced to the round of 48, which will be contested today and Friday. Kim Hamrock of Huntington Beach also won one of six women’s heats Wednesday.
Jordy Brough, a Huntington Beach native living in Hawaii, advanced to the semifinals of the junior division.
Nathaniel Curran of Oxnard, Matt King of Huntington Beach and Shaun Burrell of Redondo Beach won sixth-round heats in the men’s division. Carl Holm of Morro Bay, Pat Gadauskas of San Clemente, Nate Tyler of Templeton Point and Brandon Tipton of Huntington Beach also advanced.
