L.A. County Report Card -- Grade 10

In California, 4.6 million public school students in grades two through 11 took the Stanford 9 standardized tests this spring--for the fifth year in a row. All of them were tested in reading, math and language skills such as grammar and punctuation. Students through eighth grade also took a spelling test, and students in higher grades took exams in science and history/social science.

Students also took tests tied to the state’s tougher standards in the same subjects, such as English and language arts.

For the record:

Los Angeles Times Saturday August 31, 2002 Home Edition Main News Part A Page 2 National Desk 18 inches; 671 words Type of Material: Correction
Test scores--In Friday’s special Report Card section with test scores for Los Angeles County schools, one of the grade level headings was mislabeled. The scores for eighth grade, not 10th grade, began on the left-hand column of Page S4. The 10th-grade heading on Page S5 was correct.

Readers who want to know how a school in Los Angeles County is doing can use this cross-section of scores as a gauge. But bear in mind that these are results for selected grades only, not the entire school. Scores can vary from grade to grade--and from classroom to classroom--even at the same school.
