Brea Olinda Defeats Woodbridge

Irvine Woodbridge had lost just three times in its last 50 girls’ basketball games, but host Brea Olinda proved up to the challenge Saturday, defeating the Warriors, 51-42, in a nonleague game in front of 1,000.

Sophomore Lauren Pedersen’s three-pointer 20 seconds into the game initiated the proceedings and Brea Olinda, ranked No. 8 by The Times, went on a 20-6 run to build a 25-14 halftime lead.

Ninth-ranked Woodbridge (22-3) trailed by as many as 12, but used a full-court press that limited Brea Olinda to nine third-quarter points and at one juncture cut the deficit to three. The Ladycats (17-6) never allowed Woodbridge closer than four points thereafter.

Carrie Noyes finished with a team-high 12 points on five-of-seven shooting, and had six rebounds and two blocks. Pedersen finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Junior guard Jennifer Katsuyama played her second consecutive game after missing most of the season because of a knee injury. She contributed four fourth-quarter points and two assists.

Alia Stewart scored 13 points, Michelle Sanford had eight and Kathryn Geneau and Lauren Riley each had seven points for Woodbridge.

Troy 58, Bishop Montgomery 53--Amanda Livingston scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half and also had eight rebounds to help No. 7 Fullerton Troy (22-2) defeat No. 6 Bishop Montgomery (19-5) in a nonleague game at Bishop Montgomery.

Troy trailed, 23-21, at halftime.

Livingston scored 10 consecutive points in a 2 1/2-minute span down the stretch, including two free throws to put Troy up, 56-53, with 19 seconds left.

In boys’ basketball:

Fairfax 77, Modesto Christian 60--Evan Burns scored 11 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and Fairfax (24-3) closed the game with a 36-19 run for a victory over Modesto Christian, last season’s state Division I runner-up, in the Sylmar Extravaganza at College of the Canyons.

Four other players hit double figures for Fairfax, ranked fifth in the region by The Times. Kevin Bell had 16, Thomas Woods 11 and Alex Bausley and Fernando Sampson each had 10. James Noel led Modesto Christian (17-9) with 19 points.

West Hills Chaminade 74, North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake 58--Adrian Aye-Darko scored 20 points and Gerred Link added 16 points for the Eagles (19-6, 8-3) in a Mission League victory over the Wolverines (19-5, 7-3).
