Cultural Sensitivity Cuts Both Ways

Re “U.S. Air Bases Forge Double-Edged Sword,” Jan. 6: There is a problem in being a powerful, moneyed nation with, I think, basic good intentions. That problem is balance and being able to withstand the jealousies thrust at our nation under the guise of sensitivity to our military presence in their holy midst. However, if the U.S. withdrew from all foreign countries militarily, I believe that much chaos would ensue.

But I too am sensitive to having three of our airliners rammed into national sites, killing thousands of my fellow Americans. I too am sensitive to having to listen to foreigners on American soil complain about America while still partaking greedily of our goodwill. I too am sensitive about ingratitude to Americans for their help in times of famine, drought and financial hardship--and with totalitarian regimes that have to be gotten rid of, which endangers the lives of our servicemen and women. I too am sensitive to the insensitivity of the Muslim world to America.
