Army, Rebel Skirmishes Kill 60, Witnesses Say
From Times Wire Reports
More than a week of fighting between the army and rebels in two towns outside Burundi’s capital, Bujumbura, has left at least 60 people dead, witnesses said.
The fighting began Jan. 15 near Kanyosha with army helicopters strafing fields, a resident said.
Soldiers then moved in on rebels in the hills, said other witnesses, and at least 24 people were killed in the cross-fire.
On the same day, the army also attacked rebels outside Sare, said residents of that town, who estimated that at least 36 people have been killed in the fighting.
