Verizon to Introduce High-Speed Network

Verizon Wireless today plans to roll out one of the nation’s first high-speed wireless data networks, an introductory version of a much-heralded technology allowing faster Internet access from mobile phones and laptop computers.

The debut of Verizon’s Express Network comes as the nation’s largest wireless companies race to build third-generation networks, doing for mobile communications what cable modem and DSL service has done for land lines.

Verizon’s service initially will be available along the East Coast from Norfolk, Va., to Boston, and includes the San Francisco Bay Area and Portland, Maine.

The new third-generation networks would allow people to one day use their cell phones to send and receive songs, movies and games, supporters say. Initially, the biggest benefits will likely be allowing customers to download e-mail with attachments and play games.
