This story is based on dozens of interviews with the Schechterle family; members of the Phoenix Police Department who worked alongside Jason Schechterle; Phoenix fire officials and a firefighter on the scene; psychologists who specialize in helping families of burn victims; and the surgeons, nurses and therapists who treated Schechterle’s injuries.

Also reviewed were investigative reports of the accident, written witness accounts, emergency police and fire recordings, and court records.
